The United Kingdom and the United States have agreed to a key commercial pact that will preserve no duties on UK drug exports going into the US market.

Agreement Details of the Deal

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to raise spending on pharmaceuticals through the National Health Service (NHS). This pledge guarantees that duties on these key products will remain at nothing for a duration of the next three years.

This deal follows earlier warnings to hike import taxes on branded drug imports, with figures mentioned reaching double the cost.

"This arrangement with the United Kingdom bolsters the worldwide climate for innovative medicines and introduces long-overdue balance to transatlantic medicine commerce," a statement said.

Economic Impact

Drugs represent one of the Britain's biggest export categories to the America, which is clearly the largest buyer for leading companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Trade data reveal that in the year leading up to September, the UK shipped pharmaceutical products worth over eleven billion pounds to the US. This amount accounted for a significant portion of all goods exports in that period.

"This agreement protects work, boosts investment and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a global hub for medical research," a government official remarked.

Key UK Commitments

The deal entails several key pledges from the United Kingdom:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will raise the affordability limit at which it considers new treatments to be unaffordable by twenty-five percent.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a goal to increase total NHS spending on drugs from 0.3% of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the coming ten years.
  • Payback Limit: The percentage drug companies must refund to the NHS to prevent overspending will be restricted at 15%. Last year, repayments were more than 20%.

Broader Context

The pact follows a long-running tension between the sector and the ministers over spending levels and NHS adoption.

The disagreement were exacerbated by arguments that American consumers were charged significantly more for the same drugs than people in the Britain and the EU.

Recently, several large drug company projects in the UK have been halted or scrapped, while multi-billion-dollar investments have been pledged toward projects in the United States.

A senior figure stated that the NHS needed to spend more on drugs, noting that its expenditure on drugs had declined as a percentage of its overall budget over the previous ten-year period.
