We are analyzing video footage and photographs posted earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to verify the site from which the pictures originated was based on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.

Identifying other structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the footage were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
