Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Board Resignation
Summers stated he would retreat from public positions after House committee disclosed his repeated correspondence with the financier

Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is departing from the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a series of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.

He remarked in a statement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have participated, excited about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await following their development".

The former Harvard president, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, announced on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Email Communications

The recently released emails demonstrated that Summers communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 arrest for accused human trafficking of underage individuals.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company stated it understood his decision to depart.

"We appreciate his significant contributions and the insight he offered to the Board," OpenAI stated.

Political Context

This news comes after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on this week to pass a bill that would mandate the Department of Justice to disclose its files on Epstein.

The legislation will afterward move to the office of the White House for endorsement. He has said he expects to approve the legislation, after modifying his position on the issue following pushback from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A batch of Epstein-related correspondence released by the House Oversight Committee recently included numerous high-profile figures in the financier's past associates, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.

The communications revealed that the professor and the financier dined together frequently, with Epstein often attempting to connect the academic to influential world leaders.

Individual Statement

After the correspondence were shared with the wider community, Summers expressed he assumed "total ownership for my poor decision to persist in corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he hoped "to reestablish faith and repair connections with the individuals closest to me".

Previous Positions

Summers served in leadership roles under party leaders; acting as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He presided over the university from the early 2000s and remains a professor there. When announcing his step-down from public commitments previously on this week, he stated he would continue his teaching commitments.

Additional Consequences

Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a left-leaning think tank in Washington where he was a senior fellow, announced that he was no longer affiliated with the institution.

He joined the board of the AI company, which makes the language model, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to replace its chief executive the company leader.
