International Committee of the Red Cross Assists Hamas in Recovery for Remains of Captives in Gaza Strip

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated that its representatives accompanied members of Hamas into areas of the Gaza Strip currently controlled by IDF authority to facilitate the hunt for the bodies of Israeli hostages.

Ceasefire Agreements and Hostage Bodies Handover

As part of the truce negotiated by the United States, which took effect on October 10, Hamas is obligated to hand over the remains of all captives promptly. In exchange, the Israeli government has consented to transfer the remains of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli.

Video published by a media outlet appeared to show members of a specialized group – part of the group’s military wing responsible for guarding hostages – accompanying a humanitarian transport in a specific location near a southern city, which is beyond Israeli military control.

Difficulties in Locating Captive Bodies

The search for the bodies of individuals taken captive has turned into one of the most sensitive issues in the truce reached between the two sides. However, the effort to locate the bodies has proved challenging from the outset, given the presence of an estimated enormous amount of debris across the strip, where, as per local health authorities, at least ten thousand residents are recorded as unaccounted for, trapped under the debris.
