British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts down to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he said. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
