Liverpool's Captain Admits Team is in a Mess, Challenges Players on Responsibility

Virgil van Dijk has delivered a scathing evaluation of Liverpool's disappointing championship campaign, admitting the title holders are in a mess and failing head coach Slot while questioning whether every player is taking responsibility for the team’s slump.

Van Dijk insisted that Liverpool’s issues extend past the new recruits. “It’s tough for everyone,” he said. “My expectation is for each player to take responsibility on the field. This is necessary in order to motivate one another, to improve collectively. If a teammate presses, you must join the press. These are fundamentals but they're lacking enough.”

Appeal to Stick Together

Van Dijk continued: “In the current term we don’t have any steady form, we allow excessive scores, we are losing battles and all share the blame for it and I trust this is recognized. We have to take responsibility to reverse the situation and it is easy to assign blame but unity is essential. We have been through it together and won the league and everyone was part of it, and during a tough time you must remain united and avoid blaming others.

“Show character and confront the hardship and go again, repeatedly because surrendering is not an option then you are in the wrong environment in my eyes, because Liverpool has been enduring many adversity over those years and we’ve always come out of it. However, that doesn't imply it is easy, it’s tiring but there is only one path forward.”

The upcoming match in the domestic league is a visit to London Stadium next Sunday, after the Champions League fixture of PSV in the European competition. Van Dijk commented: “Wednesday is another game so how should I respond, dwell on the loss? No, I’m going to return and analyze how we can improve results and I trust that is what everyone is doing as well.”
