Forecasters are reporting an icy beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are advised to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay celebrations are expected to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," said the weather service.
Across the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Temperatures are forecast to be cold, so warm wraps vital, according to forecasters.
To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.
With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency explained this signified the weather was likely to cause notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is utterly key.
