Soccer legend Lionel Messi has concluded his three-day India tour in pollution-choked Delhi, after a chaotic opening in Kolkata.
On Monday, thousands of fans congregated in a Delhi stadium to catch a sight of the Argentina and Inter Miami striker.
As Messi, joined by Inter Miami team-mates Luis SuΓ‘rez and Rodrigo De Paul, strolled on the pitch β kicking balls into the stands, playing with a group of children, and giving signatures β the crowd chanted his name.
His plane from Mumbai had been held up due to fog, sources reported, and his schedule had to be shortened. On Saturday, angry fans vandalised a Kolkata stadium because they were unable to view him during his visit there.
Messi had a hectic schedule in India, taking part in a succession of marketing events in Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Mumbai since touching down in the wee hours of Saturday.
Before heading to Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium later that day, he remotely presented a 21-meter statue of himself, assembled over 27 days by a large crew in the city in eastern India.
The tour, however, started with a chaotic start after disappointed fans ripped up seats and flung items towards the pitch at the stadium.
Football is extremely popular in West Bengal state β of which Kolkata is the capital β and a multitude of adoring supporters had paid up to 12,000 rupees to be at the event.
However, most of them failed to see him as he was surrounded by officials and celebrities on his short walk around the stadium and then quickly whisked away as the situation turned hostile.
"Faulty planning of a highly anticipated event, poor coordination" and security lapses turned the stadium into a "war zone", as fans β not allowed even a sight of Messi β "vented their anger by resorting to violence."
The unrest, which made international headlines, cast a shadow over Messi's first visit to India since 2011 for what has been termed a 'GOAT [greatest of all time] tour'.
The event organiser in Kolkata has been detained, police said, and a city court has remanded Satadru Dutta to 14 days in custody.
Messi's events in Hyderabad and Mumbai passed off smoothly, with fans expressing their joy at seeing the international legend on social media and in media interviews.
Messi also had meetings with several politicians and celebrities β film actor Shah Rukh Khan in Kolkata, political figure Rahul Gandhi in Hyderabad, and sporting icon Sachin Tendulkar in Mumbai.
In between these interactions, Messi could be seen waving to large fan crowds in stadiums and juggling the ball with groups of children.
There were rumors earlier that Messi would meet Narendra Modi in Delhi, but the Indian prime minister left the country on Monday morning on a scheduled visit to Jordan, Ethiopia, and Oman.
Messi's fame is due to more than his lengthy international career and extensive TV coverage of European football β he's the record scorer for Barcelona β but also the emotional connection that countless Indians have with what is often known as the beautiful game.
