The gravest possible consequences of the climate crisis for the UK have been outlined by scientists, encompassing a scorching 4C rise in average temperatures to a 2-metre surge in sea level. An alternative projection predicts a drop of 6C in temperature following the failure of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset food production and power requirements.

Possible Outcomes, Not Forecasts

These effects, a number of which are associated with critical climate thresholds, are considered as improbable but possible. The team said that these scenarios filled a gap in forecasting that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for extreme outcomes.

"The worst-case scenarios we have mapped should not be seen as certainties, but they are plausible," commented the lead researcher who led the study. "Britain has been making preparations lacking the methods to plan for catastrophic outcomes. We've now supplied decision-makers what they need to prepare for climate outcomes they wish to avoid, but dare not dismiss."

A Suite of Severe Conditions Projections

A further series of dire projections maps the projected severity of severe conditions between now and the year 2100. These show that thermometer readings could soar in some months by up to 6C higher than historical levels, while precipitation could be triple typical amounts.

The probability of the worst-case outcomes happening could not be calculated due to uncertainty about what steps will be enacted to tackle global warming and how the Earth's systems will respond. This analysis was likened to defence planning or scenario planning for the banking sector.

• Severe Heating: Worldwide averages rising well above 4C by 2100 could happen if climate action fails or if powerful amplifying effects like the tropical forests dying unleash its vast reserves of carbon. This would lead to intense and enduring heat domes and droughts plaguing the UK in summer.
• Ocean Circulation Failure: A major ocean current, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), is slowing down and becoming unstable due to global heating. A complete failure commencing by 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Agriculture would struggle enormously and water resources would be fundamentally reshaped," said the professor.
• Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A rise of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if glaciers in the polar regions melt abruptly, inundating low-lying areas. In contrast to the other scenarios, this risk is already known by infrastructure experts.
• Aerosol Effect: Temperatures could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if industrial aerosols is drastically reduced. This unexpected result occurs because pollution particles from industrial activity block sunlight from reaching the ground.

The analysis formulated the worst-case scenarios using a blend of past data and records, computer simulations and climate physics. The scenarios exclude international cascading effects like the global food shortages and increased conflict.

The research was initiated as part of a government’s adaptation planning initiative. Earlier reports have cautioned that not enough attention was being paid to high-consequence, low-probability risks.

The government's climate advisors has stated that the UK needs to "adapt to 2C" and examine the dangers for severe warming. Earlier government strategies have been described as being "inadequate" by certain experts.
