The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman containing several human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four separate souls, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes show the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.

A World of Personal Dread

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to each person."

The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have large blooms growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."

Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
