Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this charming family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
